St John at the London Review of Books
St. John at the London Review of Books brings together two of London’s most respected institutions in a shared space shaped by restraint and quiet hedonism. Conceived as a refuge nestled within the bookshop, the project translates the familiar language of St. JOHN into an intimate setting designed for reading, reflection, and gentle gathering – a place to pause away from the pace of the city.
Drawing on St. JOHN’s established approach at Smithfield, Bread & Wine, and Neal’s Yard, the interior remains deliberately understated. A simple, unpretentious palette and utilitarian detailing create a subdued backdrop that allows books, food, and atmosphere to take precedence. The layout supports a natural rhythm through the day – from quiet moments with coffee and doughnuts to evenings of wine, conversation, and events – while always retaining a sense of calm and ease.
At its heart, this project is a meeting of good taste in food and in literature. St. John at the London Review of Books is a place where Proustians come to dunk their madeleines – a generous, quietly indulgent space where ideas and hospitality sit side by side comfortably.
